Brake lights issue

After years of driving Toyotas, i just bought my first VW, a 2021 Atlas, and noticed something strange, the brake lights wont turn on unless the engine is running or in accessory mode. In my previous cars, even rentals, pressing the brake pedal would light them up regardless of the key. The dealer insists this is normal since its on a switched circuit, but i can't help wondering if that's truly the case or if something's really off with my Atlas.

Yeah, that's normal on the Atlas. VW wired the brake lights through switched power, so they won't come on with the key off. Different from Toyota's setup, but nothing is wrong with your car

Thanks, just wondering tho, so the brake lights wont ever come on when the key is off, even if the car is rolling or in gear?
